First Year Reading Experience 2022 Book Cover Design
Using the text from this book and additional research materials such as published book reviews or interviews with the author, you will create a promotional poster and new book cover for the assigned book. You will present both designs to the First Year Reading Experiene Committee.
Process
The process of this project began with creating a mood board and researching book cover designs. I began developing a concept for my book cover, and kept developing, adding, and subtracting elements to get to the design that worked the best.
I wanted to create a puzzle of text that fits together perfectly yet imperfectly. Life is finding balance between what you think is right, and what is right. If there even is a right answer. In one’s eyes, they might look at this cover and think the letters don’t match, the colors aren’t the same and nothing lines up. But in another’s eyes, they might see a perfect balance of letters to colors. If an incoming USC freshman were to look at this cover, I would want them to see it and be able to think outside the box that the idea of ‘perfection’ is constrained to. When coming into college, you are faced with making a lot of decisions on your own. While they begin their college journey and read this book, it is important that they realize their definition of perfection might be different than their classmates or their roommates. But maintaining their balance in their life where they can strive not unrealistically towards perfection, but to good decisions is most important.
